You can set a goal to do anything, you can wish or hope for anything, but don't attach conditions to it. Don't expect it to make you happy, or sad if you don't get it, or mad if it happens and you didn't want it. Don't make it make you feel better or worse.
Expectations are adendums to our goals. Expectations make them desires and aversions, these are the source of all suffering.
Notice what happens when you don't attach expectations to your life. Your present moment isn't lost on what it should have done for you or what it could have been. It just is and you're simply lucid in the dream of your life.
Rather than automatically react as expected, consciously choose how and what you experience, if anything, and be lucid.
